Useful and interesting ... Tree and Jennison's history of the state.
. includes a wealth of information that broadens your knowledge of Vermont's
history, politics, industry, and cultural background."
Book Description
Sought out by locals and visitors alike, this first comprehensive traveler's
guide to Vermont is still the most authentic. Longtime Vermont travelers
and writers Christina Tree and Peter Jennison take you beyond foliage and
maple syrup, off the beaten path and down winding dirt roads into the heart
of Vermont. They seek out the places that don't make it into other guidebooks
to give travelers a true insider's look at the Green Mountain State. Now
in its eighth edition, it includes more information on restaurants, lodgings,
activities, and attractions than ever. Special symbols highlight bargains,
kid- and pet-friendly establishments, and handicapped access. Handy maps,
a quick-reference "What's Where" section, and a detailed index make it
easy to find where you want to go and how to get there.

Continually updated, expanded, and improved over the course of its
14 years in print, Vermont: An Explorer's Guide presents a traveler's portrait
of the state, both selective and thorough. Organized geographically, each
section opens with a verbal snapshot of the region and goes on to include
capsule descriptions of its finest museums and sites, activities, lodgings,
restaurants, entertainment, and shops. 54 photos. 25 maps. --This text

From the Author
Why I love co-authoring Vermont, An Explorer's Guide: People frequently
ask me how I got "this job" and I have to explain that I made it up. Over
the past 30 years I have written more than 1000 New England travel articles
for The Boston Globe and roughly 20 years ago I began incorporating these
stories into a series of books, which were the first to describe each of
the New England states region by region and in practical detail. Vermont
was the second in this series and half way through writing the first edition
my mother became gravely ill so my publisher, Peter Jennison, swung in
as the co-author. That was lucky! Peter, a novelist,7th generation Vermonter
and historian, is a great asset to the book which--we think--combines some
great word pictures of Vermont's least as well as best known places with
all the detail info you need to explore them. I myself travel thousands
of miles around the state every year, sleep as many places as I can and
walk into hundreds of lodging places. I also check out shops, restaurant
and take time to hike, boat and otherwise keep enjoying Vermont, which
just keeps getting better the more I explore it.

About the Author

Globe for over 30 years. She's also the co-author of Explorer's Guides
to Maine, Massachusetts, and New Hampshire, as well as Best Places to Stay
in New England. She lives in Cambridge, Massachusetts. Peter Jennison,
a sixth-generation Vermonter, is the founder of The Countryman Press, as
well as a historian, novelist, and the author of The Roadside History of
Vermont. He lives in Taftsville, Vermont, where he reviews inns and restaurants
for Vermont magazine.

Expert navigator
Hot off the press, this book has taken its rightful place as navigator
in the front seat of my car. It will soon become dog-eared (and covered
with dog hair), as it helps me find everything from great swimming holes
to funky shops and museums in my home state. So far, my favorite place
to swim is the rope swing on the Ottauquechee River--about a quarter mile
up River Road from the Taftsville Bridge. See you there!
The publisher, Helen Whybrow, The Countryman Press , September 16, 1998
An invaluable guide to all Vermont has to offer
Here we are in Woodstock, Vermont, and the leaves are beginning to
change. This is the time of year we all find any excuse to explore the
hills, and we are constantly amazed at the wealth of detail in this guide.
We highly recommend it: As residents we rely on it all the time! If you
come to this corner of the world, stop by! --This text refers to the Paperback
edition.
